Eddie Irvine: The Luck of the Irish
Published in Paperback by Haynes Publishing (January, 1997)
Author: Adam M. Cooper
Average review score:

A thoroughly interesting look at the great Eddie Irvine
As an Irvine follower, I really enjoyed reading Adam Cooper's book, which details not only the relatively recent Ferrari section of Eddie's career but gives the reader an insight into just how he developed his career to the F1 stage. A very entertaining look at the soon to be world champion (if not 99, then 2000!), including some dodgy photos from the early years!

GREAT!
Awesome Book! You don't often find information on Steady Eddie, but this book covers it all!

The book is a work of art.
The book is a work of art. Drawings, photos in black-and-white of chefs and their kitchens enhance the recipes. Most attractive are twelve color plates of foods one could die for, made from recipes in the book. If you want one beautiful book about Mexican food and how to prepare it authentically, get El Norte. Erin's Blood Royal: The Gaelic Noble Dynasties of Ireland
Published in Hardcover by Palgrave Macmillan (April, 2002)
Authors: Peter Beresford Ellis and Peter Berresford Ellis
Average review score:

Terrific new treatment of a very old aristocracy
It may come as a shock to some that Ireland still has nineteen documented native "royal" families, probably because the island's ruling dynasties were suppressed nearly five centuries ago by the imperialist Tudors. The conquest of Ireland was followed by the Flight of the Wild Geese, in which much of the Irish aristocracy fled to other Catholic countries (notably France and Spain) and was largely forgotten at home. The government of today's Ireland, however, has been granting courtesy titles to claimants who can prove their descents. Ellis is a noted scholar and popular writer in the area of Celtic studies and history and this enabled him to be "invited in" by the heads of the families to examine their claims. Each of these is "the chief of the name" -- though some also hold other Gaelic titles, such as Conor O'Brien, "The O'Brien," who also is hereditary Prince of Thomond (as well as being a baronet and Baron Inchiquin in the Peerage of Ireland under the UK). They generally have more money (based on land ownership) and education than average, and their influence in Irish culture can be considerable. The author does a very creditable job of outlining the lineage and political history of each of these families, each in its own chapter, as well as the modern-day activities of the chiefs in regaining their social positions. Following the publication of the first edition, a scandal erupted around Terence McCarthy, recognized as The McCarthy Mor, who turned out to be a complete fraud, and that episode, which badly damaged the credibility of the chiefs of Ireland, is also recounted in detail in this edition. An articulate, informative, and very well written book.

The sagas of numerous Gaelic noble families
Erin's Blood Royal: The Gaelic Noble Dynasties Of Ireland by Celtic scholar Peter Berresford Ellis is a stately and informative study of the Irish aristocracies that ruled Ireland until Henry VIII forced them to obey the English crown. Individual chapters relate the sagas of numerous Gaelic noble families, including O'Carroll, O'Connor, McCarthy, Maguire, O'Grady and many more. A highly recommended contribution to Irish Studies supplemental reading lists and reference collections, Erin's Blood Royal is an articulate and impressive account of the family branches whose descendants live in Ireland, Great Britain, America, and many other nations throughout the world today.

Ethnographic Atlas of Ifugao: A Study of Environment, Culture, and Society in Northern Luzon (Acsm Map Design Competition Collection ; 1980-27)
Published in Hardcover by Elliot's Books (November, 1980)
Authors: Harold C. Conklin, Pugguwon Lupaih, Miklos Pinther, and American Geographical Society of New York
Average review score:

Essential for Cartography, Ethnography, Book-making Pick ¿em
There are books that are fine and attractive volumes, books that are valuable for their purview of other cultures, books that stand alone as art. This atlas, in truth a working volume and nothing to be set aside in some sterile cabinet, is all of those and then some. There are a couple of books that joust for the title of the most beautiful and well-conceived in late 20th century bookmaking -- without a doubt this would be one of the very few.

A colleague of mine in graduate school first turned me toward Conklin's work; since then, it occupies a place in my pantheon of the most important works of mainstream cartography even produced, right up there with *The California Water Atlas* (produced in 1980 at vast expense to the State of California), the Richard Kagan-edited *Spanish Cities of the Golden Age*, and perhaps some of the Princeton Architectural Press volumes of the late 1990s.

And, y'know, that should count for something. An atlas isn't easy to produce, it's costly and it requires an almost impossible amount to labor. To end up with something so spectacular as the Conklin *Ethnographic Atlas* is an ultimate tribute to him and to his team, as authors, but even more, to Yale University Press, which originally printed the atlas -- although they also allowed it to go out of print, for which we can only mouth the phrase "shame."

Buy this if you can, consult it in a [really good] library if you can't buy it, and in either event, cherish the knowledge of place and of experience that such a work offers.

Review from John Klock
This atlas is a work of art and a national treasure. This ethnographic atlas is for serious students of Ifugao and the Philippine Cordillera Central. The atlas is also a model for world-wide ethnographic studies. There is not another precedent for such a work. In order to truly appreciate his in-depth analysis of Ifugao agriculture, down to the rice pannicle, one has to see how complex Ifugao agricultural life really is. Rarely in this world do we find individuals as dedicated to their scholarly work as Mr. Conklin.

Fighting for Ireland?: The Military Strategy of the Irish Republican Movement
Published in Hardcover by Routledge (September, 1995)
Author: M. L. R. Smith
Average review score:

The fallacies of the IRA
MLR Smith did an extrodinary job of portaying the military history of the IRA. He explicates the Anglo-Irish Treatry and implores the pragmatic achievments of Michael Collins. From the Civil War and hencforth, Smith examines the lapse of political ends in the IRA or the irregulars. He compares the fallacies in the bombing campaigns throughout the fifties to the philiosophies on Von Clausewitz' "On War." Never were there any political motives in the campaigns led by Sean Russel. Furthermore, One cannot expect to be victorius in limited warfare in Northern Ireland where the Protestants make up two-thirds of the population. An excellent military analysis of the IRA. Recommended to all readers.

Unbiased examination of IRA strategy
An interesting, dispassionate analysis of IRA strategy from 1969 onwards. Smith is not concerned with moralizing, and takes no position on the justness of the IRA's campaign. Rather, he looks at the methods and strategy of the IRA and how well they have (or haven't) advanced the IRA's interests. He doesn't seem to consider the IRA's goal of a united and free Ireland as realistic, and continually evaluates the IRA's position in the most pragmatic terms possible. This can be somewhat off-putting for someone wrapped up in the principles of Irish Republicanism, but it is thought provoking and these are probably the kind of arguments that were used to bring the IRA's campaign to an end by pragmatists within it and within its political allies in Sinn Fein. For this reason it is a valuable book for Irish Republican supporters to read.

For people not very familiar with the struggle in the north of Ireland, this book is probably not the best place to start. I would suggest reading a broader and more general history first, such as "The IRA" by Tim Pat Coogan, which is excellent for those with no previous knowledge of the subject (and even for those of us who do have some). Then come back to this book.

Foghorn Outdoors: Easy Camping in Northern California
Published in Paperback by Avalon Travel Publishing (June, 1903)
Author: Tom Stienstra
Average review score:

This book delivers!
I was most interested in cabins for family trips in Northern California. This book has exactly what I was looking for. We've used its recommendations the last two summers and were very pleased. Tom Stienstra has easy-to-read descriptions of cabins and campsites, along with the important details. My only complaint is that the book is now three years old, and doesn't include websites. I'd like to see a new edition. But I still use the book and recommend it highly.

Great Guide!
I bought this book hoping that it would give me a few suggestions for campsites in Marin County, since I have recently moved here. Within minutes I had found three campsites that I will be enjoying this summer and will easily find thanks to clear and concise directions. Tom Stienstra has an easy writing style to read and gives all the pertinent information to his readers about the sites he discusses. It is obvious that he loves the outdoors and wishes to not only spread this love, but his knowledge of great "easy" camping in Northern California and the beauty within this area that anyone can enjoy.

Following the Milky Way: A Pilgrimage on the Camino De Santiago
Published in Paperback by Pilgrims' Process (01 May, 2001)
Author: Elyn Aviva
Average review score:

One of the best on the Camino.
Elyn Aviva has written an excellent book on walking the Camino. She includes the human interest angle as well as interesting info about the history, cultural aspects, and architecture. The fact that her walk was in 1982, before the Camino became the popular pilgrimage route it is now, is quite interesting. I consider this book to be a great addition to my growing library of books on this subject.

Going to Santiago...a must read!
This account of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, made in 1982, before the current resurgence, contains everything you need to know about history, architecture, myth and legend along the ancient route across northern Spain and more. It is a personal account, but one chock full of customs and lore, as well as facts and individual musings on the nature of pilgrimage and what drives a pilgrim to leave home and hearth to trek 500 miles to the medieval end of the world.

Elyn tells her story with humor and pathos and ask the reader to consider just what the pilgrimage route and the symbols contained therein might really mean for today's pilgrims. It is, after all, both an inner and outer journey.

From Blue to Black
Published in Paperback by Serpent's Tail (September, 2001)
Author: Joel Lane
Average review score:

Enthralled
Joel Lane, you have amazed me. From the moment I began reading this rare tale of strange love, emotional corruption, and rock music, the prose seemed to find its way into my thoughts during my non-reading moments. This is one of those books that takes you fully through the gamut of every feeling and reaction the human psyche can conceive. The title serves as an excellent overview, those who have read may agree; from a blue sadness, to a black endlessness. I don't care whether you are gay, straight, goth, whatever: there is something in here that will find ways to pleasantly haunt you long after you finish the last page.

From start to finish.
This book had me wrapped up from the very beginning. The characters were colorful and three dimensional, while still being realistic. The knowledge and factoids about the bands and music scene mentioned were impeccable and drew in an eerie sense of realism. Even when I wasn't reading this book I was thinking about it. The story is hauntingly beautiful without being over the top or garish. Throw in some tears and you've got a great relaxing read. I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to you to read.
