The Abaco Guide: A Cruising Guide to the Northern Bahamas Including Grand Bahama, the Bight of Abaco, and the Abacos
Published in Paperback by Seaworthy Publications (December, 1998)
Authors: Stephen J. Pavlidis and Stephen Pavlidas
Average review score:

Stephen P Has Been There and Done It
I have cruised the Bahamas aboard all kinds of small boats for over 30 years, and I wouldn't go without Stephen P's books. There have been many Bahamas cruising guides written but many fall far short of the complete story.
Stephen P. has spent many years in the Bahamas. His guide info is virtually faultless. His charts are the best and amazingly accurate. This is not always the case with other guides. His stories and "local knowlege" is historic. He spends countless hundreds of hours on sight to obtain the information needed to produce a really good guide. He is an active ham radio operator so you can talk to him anytime and discuss his works.
I guess it's obvious that I love the Guide. Stephen Crow K4CPX

Above Capricorn : Aboriginal biographies from Northern Australia
Published in Unknown Binding by Angus & Robertson ()
Author: Stephen Davis
Average review score:

This is a good book, and a good introduction.
I just recently returned from Australia and I visited the Aboriginal Cultural Center. I purchased the book at the center and found it to be a good introduction to the culture and the poetry. Although the book is presently out of print, it is well worth the effort to secure a copy. I am presently searching for additional copies for gifts. The photography and the poetry are quite exceptional.

Across the Columbia Plain: Railroad Expansion in the Interior Northwest, 1885-1893
Published in Paperback by Washington State Univ Pr (September, 1995)
Author: Peter J. Lewty
Average review score:

Excellent book.
This is an excellent and much needed book on the history of railroad building in the Interior Northwest. Some of the chapters include the various Palouse lines, Stampede Tunnel, Coeur d'Alene area, NP's Central Washington Branch, and more. Well written and researched. A few photos, mostly text. Lengthy appendix. Highly recommended. I hope somebody writes another book on this area continuing on from 1893.

I am inlove with this state, and I love adventure as well, so why not... I'm 14 years old and I collect travel books, I travel a lot and want to see everything there possibly is to see out in the world. This book is not only a good guide, it's fun to read as well. I recommend it to anyone considering a trip to the wildest state in the country.

African Rhythm Hardback with accompanying CD : A Northern Ewe Perspective
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (October, 1995)
Author: Kofi Agawu
Average review score:

Modeling Rhythmic Signification
While many studies on African rhythm approach this subject by focusing on its instrumental, percussive manifestation, this distinctively regional research assumes the centrality of the Ewe and Siwu languages at the basis of its characterization. Expanding on Nketia's general work on Ghanaian musics, Agawu combines anthropology, linguistics and European music theory as he takes the reader from the ethnography of a fictional soundscape (rhythmic physical activities in an Ewe community over the course of a day) to the rhythmic properties of the language itself (tone patterns, temporal spacing), concluding with accounts of two performances and conceptual models of Ewe rhythmic processes. He points out that the rhythmic qualities (stress, quantity and resultant pattern) of Ewe or Siwu languages so far have not received the same attention that tonal features have. A centerpiece of Agawu's presentation is his model of "Northern Ewe modes of rhythmic signification", a model that he introduces early on and later revises in its representative potential. It situates speech at the inception of rhythmic expression, yet allows "feedback-loops" and other generative impulses outside its domain to affect the musical process. Refreshing is Agawu's authoritative, yet similarly self-effacing and non-imposing writing style. His clarity of communication and lack of superfluous intellectualism makes this a very accessible and "alive" text, there is neither too much unduly self-referential pathos nor artificial scientific detachment in his descriptions. The book really seems to rest on Agawu's innate connection to this culture, and it is all the more interesting to see how he utilizes analysis and conceptualization of Western European origin to frame the issues in his discussion. At all times, while neither being afraid to honestly acknowledge compromise nor ideologically prevented from proceeding in such fashion, Agawu is aware of any attached implications that come hand in hand with this practice, yet doesn't deem them mutually exclusive.

The Age of Migrating Ideas: Early Medieval Art in Northern Britain and Ireland: Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Insular Art H
Published in Paperback by Sutton Publishing (September, 1998)
Authors: John Higgitt and R. M. Spearman
Average review score:

A goldmine of information
The collected papers in this book answered many questions about Celtic Art that I have been asking for years. The book is written to scholarly standards that make the reading pretty tough going if you do not already have a pretty good grasp of the subject. Definitely not for the day tripper looking for romanticized Celtic thrills, this book is a collection of the work of the real experts in Medieval Art and Archaeology of the 7th to 10th centuries in Northern Britain and Ireland.

I am not an insider in academic circles so the question left unanswered that most troubles me is "How will I know when the next International Conference on Insular Art will be held so that I can try to attend it?"

Alaska Light: Ideas and Images from a Northern Land
Published in Paperback by Univ of Nevada Pr (01 June, 1998)
Author: Kim Heacox
Average review score:

Photography as Poetry
I saw this book alongside more than fifty kindred at the Denali Visitor Center. We chose this for our table display book because it alone showed Alaska as the word itself defines - "The Great Land." This is the book Robert Service would have chosen to illustrate his poetry about "the great, big, broad land 'way up yonder...the beauty that thrills me with wonder, it's the stillness that fills me with peace."

If you can't go, you are the poorer for it, but this book will enrich your eyes and your spirit.

Angels and men
Published in Unknown Binding by H. Hamilton ()
Author: Catherine Fox
Average review score:

Excellent
Very interesting and realistic story of a young woman struggling with her self image, sexuality, the church, her parents and God himself. There are quite a few subtle literary and biblical references which are rich. Fox avoids the pedantic overdone story lines so common in recent fiction. Worth reading for sure.
