The Cardinal
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Texas Press (November, 1992)
Average review score:

A tribute to the CardinalThis book is a definite 'must read' for cardinal lovers. It will bring you closer to these very special winged angels as it provides the reader with season by season fact-filled details about their habits and rituals. I was awed by the colorful photos of the cardinals captured in all phases of their everyday activities. Since I've read the book, I've witnessed many rituals I would have never noticed before - the cardinal kiss, feeding the young, anting, preening, pecking order, gathering nesting material, building the nest, etc. Now, I devote special time each day to watch the family of cardinals in our backyard and cannot believe all that I'd missed over the years. I credit this book for opening my eyes and ears to the phenomenal miracles of nature and God's wondrous creative process. It also provided the groundwork for a most fascinating hobby - birdwatching. I now have become involved watching and studying other birds as well.

Carving the Western Path: By River, Rail and Road Through Central and Northern B.C
Published in Paperback by Heritage House Pub Co Ltd (October, 1999)

Crashing North, (eventually) to Alaska!Like Harvey's previous and companion volume, "Carving the Western Path - By River, Rail, and Road Through BC's Southern Mountains", this is an entertaining, informative, and stimulating read. Here he deals with transportation development along the upper Fraser River, the Peace River, and basically everything in the northern half of British Columbia. This is a book about how paddlewheel steamers, railroads, and finally highways came to be in this vast and remote northwestern part of North America, making possible cities, ports, industries, and travel in general. Particularly interesting were the sections covering the transportation demands of the Klondike gold rush of 1897-98, and the amazing effort during World War II that resulted in the building of the first road to Alaska through northern Canada. The author includes the effects of telegraph construction and early aviation on development, as well. This is a story that encompasses rogues and heroes, silly politicians, and people of courage and vision; a few famous, and most not. There is humour too, especially in the pipe-dreams of a few, such as the proposal to build a monorail up the Rocky Mountain trench. The author is very familiar with his material, and has a pleasant sympathy for the native people, the railroad laborers, and the transportation needs of the miners, settlers, farmers, and the common people of the times. As in the earlier companion book, Harvey has included good documentation, and both are written in an easy-going style, have a nice clear typeface for those of us whose eyes are ageing, and contain a number of helpful maps and information boxes that work well. And as in the previous volume, there are a lot of great period photos here! Though not strictly necessary, the reader should strongly consider getting and reading both volumes, as I did. Separate or together, they are an excellent immersion into a little-known aspect of the history of the west.

Speel brilliantly explains a shift in Presidential Politics.Speel meticulously explains how the South is a kind of poison apple of American politics. After the Civil War the Democrats won the South but lost most of the Presidential elctions. Now it turns out that the Republicans own the South but are having difficulty winning Presidential elections. A splendid insight! This book is a place to being understanding American politics.

The Civil War Letters of Dr. Harvey Black: A Surgeon With Stonewall Jackson (Army of Northern Virginia)
Published in Hardcover by Butternut & Blue (July, 1996)
Average review score:

Book DescriptionDr. Harvey Black, grandson of one of the founders of Blacksburg, Virginia, served as surgeon of the 4th Virginia Regiment, as surgeon of the Stonewall Brigade, and as surgeon in charge of the Second Corps Field Hospital of the Army of Northern Virginia. Black's Civil War letters, which begin with Stonewall Jackson's Shenandoah Valley Campaign of 1862 and end with Jubal Early's Valley Campaign of 1864, discuss climactic battles like Second Manassas, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. Literate and perceptive, Black had interesting things to say about figures like Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, Jubal Early, and Thomas Rosser. The Second Corps Field Hospital was the site of the amputation of Jackson's arm at Chancellorsville, and Black was one of three surgeons who assisted Dr. Hunter McGuire in the operation. In addition to Harvey Black's letters, the book contains three letters of his wife Mollie, all that have survived. They poignantly reveal the trials Southern women faced during the war, fending for themselves and their families. The small town of Blacksburg in Appalachian Virginia also plays an important part in the story. An appendix transcribes and analyses the free and slave schedules for the 1860 Blacksburg census.
Black was a significant figure in the Civil War and postwar Virginia medicine and education. After the war, Black helped found what is today known as Virginia Tech.

Coastal Wildflowers of the Pacific Northwest: Wildflowers and Flowering Shrubs from British Columbia to Northern California
Published in Paperback by Mountain Press Publishing Company (June, 2003)
Average review score:

Great for the noviceThis is a great book for the novice botanist. As a person who just recently started trying to identify wildflowers in the Monterey area, I found this book a great guide. I already have a couple of other books, including the ones from the Audubon Society and from the California Native Plant Society, but this one is so simple and covers most of the flowers you commonly see. It's easy to flip through, the pictures are clear and in color, and it certainly doesn't overwhelm you with technical jargon. I was only sorry it doesn't include some of the smaller/tinier flowers I see around. Maybe in the next edition. A great gift!
