Most Authoritative Book about Loons
Judy McIntyre is one of the world's authorities on loons. This book reflects not only the wealth of her technical knowledge about loons (written in a very readable style!) but also personal glimpses into the lives of loons from someone who has spent years studying them in their natural environment AND in captivity. It's a fascinating read!

Communities of the Blessed: Social Environment and Religious Change in Northern Italy, Ad 200-400 (Oxford Early Christian Studies)
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (May, 2000)
Author: Mark Humphries
Average review score:

A great teacher!
I had the pleasure of studying under Dr. Humphries during my junior year abroad at NUI Maynooth. His passion for the ancient world was evident in all his lectures, from the fall of Rome to Latin language.

Unfortunately, I don't own a copy of this myself (being a poor college student), but if it's anything like his lectures, it is well-researched, well-written and full of gorgeous pictures and illustrations. Please, support a wonderful teacher and buy this book!!

The Month by Month Gardening Guide is especially helpful since it covers lawn care, trees, shrubs, vines, groundcovers, perennials, annuals, roses, irrigation systems, tools and general tasks. This book is a wonderful complement to the Sunset Western Garden Book.

Constellations of the Northern Sky (National Audubon Society Pocket Guides)
Published in Paperback by Knopf (April, 1995)
Authors: Mark Chartrand, Wil Tirion, and Gary Mechler
Average review score:

Wonderfully compact; good binocular or naked eye companion.
This tiny book packs the only most useful information into the smallest usable size, small enough to fit in a shirt pocket. I keep mine in my binocular case. It has compact overview maps showing constellations and a few selected objects by season, then constellation by constellation maps with greater detail and many objects which can be seen in binoculars or a small telescope. On the page facing each map is short, well written text describing the most interesting stars and deep sky objects on the map.

Because of its small size, it is limited to only the brightest stars and objects, but there is plenty detail for star hopping to interesting objects with the aid of a pair of binoculars. It is not a substitute for a serious field guide and star atlas, but begginers will find plenty to look for with this and more experienced stargazers will appreciate its convenience.

This book is a good way to learn your way around the sky. Remember, it takes some practice to learn how to read a star map and mentally rotate and project it onto the curved night sky. You get better at this with practice. I also suggest you get a small flashlight with a red filter.

Beginners wishing to learn constellations may also wish to consult Levitt and Marshall's classic "Star Maps for Begginers", which has much less cartographic detail (perhaps an advantage for learning the constellations). This book is much more useful on an ongoing basis, however.

Contact
Published in Paperback by Pan Macmillan (13 March, 1987)
Author: A. F. N. Clarke
Average review score:

An Endless War
Contact is the best account of military service in North Ireland during the latest eruption of terrorism. It gives us a fresh view of the "Troubles" from a British paratrooper who served in Belfast and Crossmaglen. It discusses lessons that might apply to the violence now taking place in Isreal.

Contested Ground: Comparative Frontiers on the Northern and Southern Edges of the Spanish Empire (Southwest Center Series)
Published in Hardcover by University of Arizona Press (May, 1998)
Authors: Donna J. Guy and Thomas E. Sheridan
Average review score:

Major contribution to Latin American & frontier studies.
This book should become a major contribution to Latin American studies, because it provides fresh perspectives on topics we'd thought we already knew well. It does so by relating Latin America to vital issues in history, notably recent research on frontier history, "the new Western history," & themes of race, class & gender. The chapter by Susan Socolow, discussing Argentine frontier women & thus engendering the history of the gauchos, is particularly strong, but so are most of the others. One drawback is that coverage is largely limited to the far margins of Spanish America (northern Mexico & Rio de la Plata regions), when there is plenty of work to do on the frontiers of core areas of Spain's New World empire, e.g. Peru & Bolivia. (There is some fine material on Brazil, but the book's main emphasis is on Spanish America.) Nevertheless, this work definitely advances understanding of important aspects of Latin American history.
