The Irish hunger strike
Published in Unknown Binding by White Island Book Co. ()
Author: Tom Collins
Average review score:

An unbelievable example of a groups willingness to sacrifice
I was fortunate to be able to purchase this book in Dublin, while on a trip to Ireland in 1988. While I had been interested in the Irish struggle since reading Leon Uris's "TRINTY", I was never able to get as close to it until I read this book. It made such an impression on me that I actually went 7 days without eating to experience just a fraction of what these men went through. The dedication to their cause was heroic, especially when you consider the ambivalence of the rest of the world. It was a great book and a real eye opener. I just hope those men didn't die in vain. GIVE IRELAND BACK TO THE IRISH!!

Irish Nocturnes
Published in Paperback by The Davies Group (November, 1999)

Of Ireland and Life
I read Irish Nocturnes with a great deal of pleasure. Everyone of the 18 essays brought me closer to what one might refer to as the unexpected beauty in our lives. One will definitely fall in love with life. Everyday experiences are told with a touch of wonder to them. As the essays grow deeper in lyricism and poetry, so does the universal appeal of the sentiments they invoke, including longing, nostalgia, gentleness, childlike optimism, adult realism, and stability. The author, Chris Arthur, is a master of sharing personal experiences in a way that they can become one's own. Although I have not been to Ireland, I find myself sharing the author's pathos for Ireland's beauty and strength. I recommend this collection of essays to everyone interested in that which is both beautiful and thoughtful.

Kindred Crimes

Author: Janet Dawson
Average review score:

EXTREMELY ENTERTAINING
A great PI series. This book is on the edge of hard core without all the gore. The character development gives you an insight into the feelings of the book and the plot development keeps you wanting to read on and on. I met Janet Dawson at a booksigning a number of months ago. Bought this first book to try "one of these days". When I finally got around to trying it I could kick myself for waiting so long. It is wonderful. If you haven't tried it, for crying out loud, get it. Just don't do what I did and wait for awhile. Buy it, read it, NOW!!!

The Lake of the Beginning: A Fable of Salmon, Northern Lights and An Old Promise Kept
Published in Hardcover by Willow Creek Press (September, 1998)
Authors: Ed Gray and Jeff Foott
Average review score:

One of the greatest works of all time!
I found this book by accident in my school library, and up till now, i have been borrowing it to read. This story describes all about the life of the Sockeye Salmon, told by a Qualik man, on how they tried very hard to return to the old ocean when it was being divided. They spent many years to get to the old ocean, but there was a waterfall obstructing their path. On the other hand, a mother and 2 children came to this part of Alaska to throw their grandmother's ashes into the river in which the Sockeye salmon came to breed. They met the Qualik man, and he began to tell the tale of the Sockeye Salmon. Both parts of the stories meet at the near end of the story, to form a very touching ending. First-time readers may find it very difficult to comprehend the whole story, but with patient reading and analysing, you will realise that this story is a one-of-a-time classic. A beautiful story written by Ed Gray, and i recommend it to all readers. Thumbs up for Lake of the Beginning!

The Lambas of northern Rhodesia; a study of their customs and beliefs
Published in Unknown Binding by Negro Universities Press ()
Author: Clement Martyn Doke
Average review score:

The Lambas
This book gives an excellent history of the Lamba people and their culture. Doke tells it like it was. It gives great insight to many of the tribes of Northern Rhodesia at the beginning of this century. Parts of the book are slow if you are not familiar with the area, but on the whole it is an interesting study of the Lamba tribe.

Land of Jade. A Journey from India through Northern Burma to China
Published in Hardcover by Orchid Press (June, 1996)
Author: Bertil Lintner
Average review score:

Now this is adventure!
When Bertil Lintner and his wife, Hseng Noung, set out to visit the Kachins in Upper Burma, little did they know that the journey would take 18 months and involve walking from India to China. But they did it and this book is the result. It's a fascinating description of a part of the world cut off from the outside for over 30 years. The Lintner's spent most of their time with various rebel groups, and this account delves deeply into both the politics and culture of this little-known land.

Hilarious and sweet novel for kids 10 and up.
What if your mom marries the stuffy Prime Minister of Canada -- and he just happens to have five daughters exactly your age? They're identical quintuplets. They're Canada's darlings. They're *perfect.* And you see the sixth bed, and everyone tells you to behave exactly like the quints. What do you do? If you're red-headed Willa, first you throw all the potato chips at the TV. Then you put on your most assertive T-shirt. And then you take firm (well, mostly firm) action to change the lives of the quints -- and of the entire Prime Minister's household -- forever

Superb overview.
Charles Cutter, professor at Purdue University and all-around nice guy, has written a superb overview of an often overlooked aspect of Spanish frontier history. Son of legendary Borderlands historian Donald Cutter, Charles proves himself a premier historian of the period in his own right.
