The Japanese High School: Silence and Resistance (Nissan Institute/Routledge Japanese Studies Series)
Published in Library Binding by Routledge (June, 1999)
Author: Shoko Yoneyama
Average review score:

ijime in japanese schools
This book provides documentation of the most sensational examples of ijime [bullying]in Japanese schools. It also gives examples of teacher-assisted ijime and the tragic consequences. Too often, these stories are buried and meant to be forgotten. It is the shameful underside of the Japanese school system. In a country where appearances are everything, the instances of bullying in schools are denied or delicately expurged form the national consciousness. No wonder it has never been translated into Japanese.

A wake up call to Japanese education
This book is a MUST read for anyone trying to understand the forces at work in Japanese schools and society (one and the same). I found it not only well documented but also highly readable, gripping even in parts, rare for an academic book. I only hope it will soon be published in Japanese so that the Japanese public can also benefit from Yoneyama's insights and in-depth research.

Contradicting the idea that Japan is the model education system, as seen in the eyes of many westerners trying to boost their own systems, Yoneyama shows how the excessive control from the top down by administrators of teachers and teachers of students is ultimately killing the system. At the same time students, in a desperate attempt to salvage some control, are literally killing themselves and each other.

Kakadu
Published in Hardcover by Simon & Schuster (May, 1992)
Average review score:

Incredible imagery created with his music.
Since I have all of Tony O'Connor's CDs, there are tracks on each that I prefer. On Kakadu, I really enjoy track 3 with the Aboriginal digerdoo. His ability to transport one to the environment about which he is "making music" is amazing.

The best relaxing, interesting music in a LONG, LONG time.
We have 9 of T.C's CD's, and each one is a favorite for late night relaxation and good listening. Gave 2 to a friend who was in hospital for 5 days. They made her stay very tolerable and she hasn't given them back. My massage lady plays them in her massage rooms and has had many requests from her clients. Very unusual sounds. I highly recommend any of his CD's. He has a new one, "Live at Sydney Opera House". Wish that I had been there. Tony and his wife are two very talented people.

The Last Princess : The Story of Princess Ka'iulani of Hawai'i
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (January, 2001)
Authors: Fay Stanley and Diane Stanley
Average review score:

A very worthy true story with terrific illustrations
Fay Stanley's very worthy true story, "The Last Princess," is the tale of the life of Princess Ka'ilulani of Hawaii (or "Hawai'i" as it's more correctly spelled throughout the book). The book is illustrated by Fay Stanley's daughter, Diane Stanley, and this mother-daughter team has come up with a captivating and sad true story about a portion of history little of us know anything about.

Princess Ka'iulani was the niece of the king of Hawaii when she was born towards the coming of the 20th century. Great rejoicing attended her birth, as the king himself had no children. By all accounts, Ka'iulani was cheerful, beautiful, polite, kind, intelligent, and more than worthy of taking over the throne when the time came. Unfortunately, Americans intervened and little by little usurped the king's power. By the time Ka'iulani returned to the island after her schooling in England, the Hawaiian islands were an entirely different place--and not for the better.

Ka'iulani appealed to President Grover Cleveland's better nature and although he did his best to help her, upon leaving the White House after his presidency, Ka'iulani now had no American political friends. It was far more in America's interests to annex Hawaii to America than it was to help this charming, serious princess regain her rightful access to the Hawaiian throne.

This is a terrifically absorbing tale. Ka'iulani is presented beautifully by the illustrations, which show different aspects of her personality while always emphasizing her dignity and popularity among the Hawaiian people. The two Stanley ladies have taken a little-known subject and presented it to us with power and handsome decoration, and the end result is highly compelling.

Educational, full of history and culture, nice pictures!
Gives children a real look at the history of Hawaii. A beautiful, sad and true story. Would like to buy a bunch more and give to children for gifts.

Let's Go 2000 New Zealand (Let's Go. New Zealand, 2000)

Authors: Nick Grossman, Laura M. Bacon, and Griffin Trade Paperbacks

It's the best of the best
As a student traveler I found that this book helped out more than any of the other travel books. It gives good recommendations, lists cheap places to stay, and has more descriptions of the small towns than any other travel book. My next journey is to the UK and I have already bought a Let's Go book for it.

practical guide
this guide is very informative and well-written. it hits allthe major touristy places and a lot of out of the way sites too. ifyou've never been to new zealand, and are on a budget, this is the guide for you. good options for hostels and restaurants. lots of cheap walking tours and affordable things to do. thumbs up!

Let's Go 2001: Australia: The World's Bestselling Budget Travel Series
Published in Paperback by Let's Go Travel Pubns (15 December, 2000)
Author: Inc. Let's Go
Average review score:

Absolutely the best guide for budget travel in Oz
Having traveled a great deal using a vast array of guides, this is one of the best guides I've ever encountered. Reviews are frank, accurate, and honest. The writers are friendly and assume you know little to nothing about the area itself. It features all the standard maps as well as many options for lodging, food, and entertainment in virtually all tourist destinations- even those off the beaten track. It is worth noting that if you are interested in staying in five-star hotels, this is not the book to consult. It is geared mainly for young travellers sticking to a budget, willing to stay in hostels and looking for cheap deals on food, drink and entertainment.

The editors provide lots of practical information, such as hours of operation and directions to places such as train stations, airports, bus terminals, places to buy traveler's checks, and where you can access the Internet. Their numbers, addresses, and prices are up-to-date, something of which other guides such as Lonely Planet would do well to take note.

Descriptions of hostels provide contact information as well as candid observations about the clientele, room quality, and quirks, such as resident dogs and friendly staff members. I found it particularly helpful since there were so many hostels in major cities - the descriptions give you more to go on than just the price and location.

I spent six months travelling around Australia, and the binding on my book was broken within several weeks. I always consulted it before hitting the road and found so much useful information. I later loaned it out to a friend who found it equally helpful. I always carry at least two guidebooks to a destination, but can honestly say the Let's Go guide was sufficient on its own to carry me through my travels. Australia is a wonderful country with much to see and do. I highly recommend this guide for getting around, particularly if you are travelling on a budget.

Great Book
For student travelers, Let's Go is the only guide book you need. Perhaps for older travelers--or those wanting to aviod the youth hostel party travel adventure--Lonely Planet would be a better chioce, but Let's Go is a great book. I spent a semester at the University of Sydney, and Let's Go was indespenable. Since it is revised yearly by college students it contains up to date information that comes from a piont of view that I could easly identify with. It is important to reilize that no writing is without bias. That having been said, knowing that I shared much in common with the aothors of the book made it easy to trust Let's go as a guide book.

Lilian's Story
Published in Hardcover by Viking Press (November, 1987)
Author: Kate Grenville
Average review score:

Amazing Survival
Lilian's Story is a book I have had to read for my university english course, and it is one of the most amazing books I have ever read. Lilian is a true survivor when all the odds are against her. I would recommend this to anyone.

moving
This novel is one of the most emotive I have read. It tells the story of a girl and her struggles to conform to the norms of her dysfunctional family and abusive father. She is an outcast not only within her own family but within the colonial, patriarchal society she lives in. Eventually, she rejects the conformism of her upper-class upbringing and becomes an outspoken street person A fictionalised account of the life and times of the late Bea Miles, well known Sydney eccentric

The Mardu Aborigines: Living the Dream in Australia's Desert (Case Studies in Cultural Anthropology)
Published in Paperback by International Thomson Publishing (November, 1997)
Authors: Robert Tonkinson, Louise S. Spindler, and George D. Spindler
Average review score:

excellent to learn about the aboriginal culture
I used the book for an tourism Assignment. I must say it supplied sufficient information form me and it was a choice book to read. Thanks very much it was choice.

This is a highly informative and fascinating book.
One of the most comprehensive and descriptive treatises on a complex hunter and gatherer society, which until recently was still pursuing a traditional lifestyle, largely unaffected by European influences. Although scholarly in intent, this work is eminently readable as it takes one deeply into the world of an ancient culture, and most particularly into the fascinating religious life of the Mardu Aborigines of Australia's Western Desert, one of the world's very last frontiers. A truly exquisite ethnography, a must read for those interested in human ingenuity in surviving and thriving in one of the world's most difficult environments. I highly recommend this extraordinary account, for its empathy and deep appreciation of the human condition.

Mutiny and Romance in the South Seas: A Companion to the Bounty Adventure
Published in Hardcover by Salem House Publishing (May, 1989)
Authors: Sven Wahlroos, Bounty, and Rolf Du Rietz
Average review score:

EXCITING, DRAWS EVERYTHING TOGETHER!!!
I truly enjoyed this book. I loved the way it was laid out in chronological order. It was easy to pick up and read for a few minutes, without getting so engrossed you couldn't leave. (But if you had a lot of time to spend, you could get engrossed then!) Each month is approximately 2 pages, and includes information on different scenarios--The Bounty, Tahiti, Pitcairn, Bligh's launch, England--wherever there is something important happening at the time that is known about, all of it is included. The author's views are presented in a manner which lets you know they are his views only, but are done in a very non-assuming way. This book is pleasant, exciting and very informational--it really draws everything together. Highly recommended!!!...

Only analysis of Bounty saga by a professional psychologist.
Dr. Sven Wahlroos' book "Mutiny and Romance in the South Seas" provides a careful review of the Bounty mutiny without taking any sides. His analysis exposes the underlying tensions that ultimately led to the undoing of everyone involved. Reading this book cannot help but be an enriching experience for anyone who has pondered the situations that led to Bligh's epic voyage in an open boat and Christian's sad end on Pitcairn.
