Wine Atlas of Australia & New Zealand
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollinsPublishers Australia (September, 1999)
Author: James Halliday
Average review score:

THIS WINE ATLAS USED FOR AN AMAZING WINE TOUR "DOWN UNDER'
My recent month-plus tour of wineries in Australia and New Zealand was greatly based upon the excellent research, reviews and contacts using this fine reference. As a budding wine writer, collector, and head of a local Enological Society in the Pacific Northwest,Halliday's Atlas has been the virtual bible enabling the design of both the tour and subsequent writing. As my primary interest was a focus upon pinot noirs, my tour began in Australia where I visited Halliday's own Coldstream Hills Vineyard. His work provide a roadmap enabling me to contact other prominent pinot noir producers in the Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsula-Main ridge, Stonier, Yering Station, Paringa Estates and others. While there, I also made contacts and was invited to a new release winetasting of New Zealand wines held in Melbourne. Quite amazingly, the first person I met was the great James, himself. It was fun and a privilege to share wine tasting experience and comments.
From there, the tour extended to the whole of New Zealand. Again the Atlas laid the groundwork for my visits, enabling me to meet most of New Zealand's greatest owners and winemakers, including John Buck at Te Mata,Kevin Judd at the famous Cloudy Bay,Neil McClallum at Dry River, Grant Taylor at Gibbston Valley and many others.Naturally, covering nine separate wine regions entailed tasting many other prime quality varietals in such warmer climes as Waiheke Island and Hawkes Bay with their magnificent cabernets and Bordeaux blends, plus gorgeous chardonneys, etc. In all cases, the Atlas gave regional and subregional data and exacting descriptions of "terrior" necessary to a serious study.Halliday is, in my book, a more comprehensive writer and reviewer of "new world" wines than even Jancis Robinson or Robert Parker. He also adds the direct insights of his winemaking in Australia and his pioneering of pinot noir developments "down under". His reputation as a critic is simply impeccable and his easily read writing style, while detailed, is at once comprehensive and comprehensible. It is a must read and essential reference for serious oenophiles and fellow wine tourists.

If you want to know about Australian wines buy this book
If you read this book you get a very good vieuw of the Australian wines and winery's mr.Halliday did,as in his other books,an amazing job. for all the wine lovers out there a must buy

Wine Companion, 1999: Australia & New Zealand
Published in Paperback by HarperCollinsPublishers Australia (November, 1998)
Author: James Halliday
Average review score:

Great book for Aussie/NZ wines
Arguably THE book for Aussie and NZ wines, especially good for New Zealand since no major wine magazine has written extensive detail on this region. Great handbook to have. Agree with earlier post that vintage charts by region would be great to have, as well as some index on who the 5* producers are.

A thorough walk-through of (good) Aussie & Kiwi wines
This is a great book. Not only is it quite up-to-date (with tasting of recent vintages), it also covers the majority of the good-to excellent producers. It's written in a 'Parker'-style with many details of the individual wineries - and several of their different bottlings. A (vague) complaint is the absence of general vintage charts. Anyway... definitely recommendable !

The Wisdom of Stones
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (April, 1994)
Author: Greg Matthews
Average review score:

I Love Greg Matthews!!!!
Wisdom Of Stones is really good. I am Australian and I loved it. I don't know why everyone is complaining about the first 30 pages . I thought they were great. I also recommend The Further Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn. Greg now resides in Australia again. Welcome home Greg. John Baranyai

It's 95% as good as "Heart" and "Power." 'Nuff said!
This is typical Greg Matthews, which means that it's superb. This story begins in pre-WWII Australia, but it's mostly a war story, with an especially vivid rendering of a prisoner-of-war camp. There are about 30 pages near the beginning that don't work (no conflict, no action, no nothing) but the rest of the novel is so great that it has to get five stars.

Writing a 'Non-Boring' Family History
Published in Paperback by Hale & Iremonger (08 August, 1998)
Author: Hazel Edwards
Average review score:

Excellent Book for a Popular Hobby
Collecting material for family histories is one of the most popular hobbies in Australia today. Unfortunately, most people amass a mountain of material and then haven't a clue what to do next. Hazel Edwards' guide to writing a family history will teach you how to develop rounded characters and craft a readable story. It also offers heaps of advice on financing, distribution and publishing your family's history. Future generations will be indebted to Edwards for the rich, well written histories that will surely follow.

A Useful Present for Family Members
So many older members of families are writing their histories. This is a great present for them because it gives hints on how to organise the project and write the information in an interesting way. There are lots of practical examples on how to structure the chapters, choose titles and check out permissions. A great present for historic relatives, and a tactful way of suggesting how to write in a non-boring way so younger family might actually read the book.

Rockin A
Angus, Brian & and the boys from the DC have spent their careers hewing pure uncompromising rock from the Mountain from whence all rock doth spew. Toiling nonstop they form the rock into blistering music that is like a blunt mallet crashing into your girating skull. This book chronicals the long careers of the lads who feel just as comfortable rocking out as hanging about in the stroh with their mates. This book will assault you like taking dope, speed, coke, two shots of bourbon and afterword you will say right I'm ready.

Agent Orange: The Bitter Harvest
Published in Paperback by Lawrence Verry (December, 1981)

Hidden dangers of Dioxin
To whom it may concern:

This informative and educational book is especially interesting to this honorably discharged Vietnam veteran, and I'm sure it will be of interest to anyone else who served over there and has helped explain why the major health problems that have struck me in the prime of my life. I'm quite sure that Agent Orange had a lot to do with my heart problems and my neurological problems, as well. This molecule, the MOST dangerous ever made by man, is not only responsible for my figurative death, but, also, the ongoing deaths of those unfortunate and innocent Vietnamese who are STILL dying in record numbers. Of course, this supposedly caring country will NOT own up to its evil and willful destruction of Vietnam and its once-beautiful country. It used Vietnam as a proving ground for its further poisoning of other 3rd world countries, such as Iraq. What a tragedy and a farce!

Al Capsella Takes a Vacation
Published in Hardcover by Henry Holt & Company (June, 1993)
Author: Judith Clarke
Average review score:

Oh Scutchthorpe...
"Are you boys going home from vacation?" everyone asks Al Capsella and his friend as they board a bus for Scutchthorpe. Alas for Al, he is going to Scutchthorpe for their vacation. But he won't need his surfboard unless it gets pretty windy by Reilly's Dam (a lot of things get lost in Reilly's Dam). The truth is, it has been a little while since I read this book and I don't remember every detail. But it might be the funniest book I've ever read. I couldn't recommend it to people after I read it because as I was trying to explain it I would start laughing uncontrollably. I think it is a complete book, I am 21 now and would read it again without hesitating, I think the last time I read it I was 20, so don't be afraid if you've passed your teenage years. I loved the other two Al Capsella books, maybe the Heroic Life is better, but this one is definitely the funniest. I especially recommend this to people who love Gordon Korman. For anyone who has ever wondered why birds fly south for the winter, J. Clarke might just be able to answer your question. This book just shouldn't be out of print!
