National Geographic Special on AustraliaThis book is one of a series of National Geographic specials on different countries. This is quite a wonderful book, as are all National Geographic specials. The boards are mottled pink with bright, incised gold lettering. The front end papers feature a multi-color relief map of Australia. The title page displays a truly beautiful multi-color reproduction of Australia's seal. Almost every page thereafter is stuffed with color photographs of Australia. This is a book about modern Australia, with some historical flashbacks. The text is conversational and descriptive. You'll want this book for your Geographic specials collection.

Australia : a traveler's survival kit
Published in Unknown Binding by Lonely Planet ()
Average review score:

It gives you the info you need to get aroundI used the 86 edition as the basis for designing a 2500 day Grand Tour of Oz. It gave me detailed info on not only the major cities, but the minor ones as well. I really liked the set up where the places described were in the order you you reached them as you drove along. I intend to get the lastest edition to take with me on my mini-GTO of Oz later this year. The book is well worth the money spent!

Australia : True Stories of Life Down Under (Travelers' Tales)
Published in Paperback by Travelers' Tales Inc (January, 2000)
Average review score:

Fun from Down UnderThis collection of travel writer's accounts of their experiences in the land of kangaroos is amusing and informative. From an explanation of why Aussies call Americans "seppos" (a legacy of the rhyming slang of convicts, seppo means septic tank and tank matches Yank)to adventures in the Outback and quite a lot else, this is just a fun book to read.

Australia and the world : a documentary history from the 1870s to the 1970s
Published in Unknown Binding by Longman Cheshire ()
Average review score:

A fantastic source book for Australian Foreign AffairsIf you are looking for key documents in Australian foreign affairs history, here is the book you need. Meticulously compiled by one of the greatest historians of Australia's foreign relations, this massive tome houses a wealth of material for scholars. The layout is basically chronological, with introductory notes on each document by Meaney, which help to set the document in its historical context. This book is expensive - but it is certainly worth the money.

Australia for Women: Travel and Culture
Published in Paperback by The Feminist Press at CUNY (October, 1997)
Average review score:

About women, by women, for women and menAn excellent companion to travels in Australia, either in life or from the armchair. Section 1 is entitled Politics and Daily Life. It includes pieces by women of a variety of ethnic backgrounds, ranging over an extremely eclectic range of topics, from women convicts to racism and politics from koori women's point of view. A reasonable representation of Aboriginal women is present - more than in most collections. Part Two looks at particular places , It is called Cities - Country - Rivers. Some of the pieces are about places well away from the regular tourist path, for example Flinders Island. This is a feminist volume, and includes chapters from lesbian women. Staying and working on organic farms is popular these days. Kaye Johnston's chapter "The revolutionary nature of Lesbian Organic Gardening" tells about her and her partner's project - Moonraker farm in the NSW Southern Highlands. At the end are several listings, some of which may be out of date. More useful is a Recommended Reading section which includes literature, anthologies, poetry and plays, fiction, autobiography, history, - mainly, but not exclusively by women. There is biographical information on each of the contributors. This is a really interesting volume to dip in to, and it is a very valuable companion to Australian cultural life, breaking out of the Crocodile Dundee, sunbronzed Aussie type of stereotype. And, I think, despite the title, there is much for men in here too!

Australia From the back of a Camel
Published in Hardcover by Creative Enterprises (22 April, 1999)
Average review score:

InformativeI have read several of Mr. Johnson's books and find them all very informative. Being an Australian, was particularly interested in "Australia from the back of a Camel". This book gives a very accurate description of the vast expanse of inland Oz, and one can almost smell the dust. For anyone contemplating a trip to Central Australia, this book is a must.

You have to buy this book, it's wonderfulYes this is the most wonderful book with fantastic pictures of, mostly extinct, birds, flora, fauna and fig trees with magnificent Koalas presiding over thousands of miles of territory.
It's a must read!
PS - I've never even seen the book and I have not idea what it's about but don't take my word for it.

Australia the Beautiful Cookbook
Published in Hardcover by Collins Pub San Francisco (June, 1995)
Average review score:

Beautiful pictures, multi culture recipes, lots of fish!!!!!Not just a book about kangeroo steaks and gator burgers like I thought. All the imigrants have added to the Australian cuisine, so you get Thai, Italian, Vietnamese and lots more! Gorgeous pictures as most "Beautiful cookbook" collectors like me :-) will know. You get lots of fish, lots of low fat lots of spice.
A "must have" for your kitchen, you get about ten cuisines in one.
