Climate Responsive Design: A Study of Buildings in Moderate and Hot Humid Climates

Wonderful Useful Information!
What a relief it was to find this book!

After ordering and returning 'Architectural Design for Tropical Regions' by Cleveland Salmon (avoid Salmon's book, unless you don't already know that "the sun can be very bright when the sky is clear and the sunlight is intense"!), this book came to my rescue.

Packed with detailed information and design strategies, along with good illustrations, this book is well suited to architects or well-educated laymen (it is NOT written at a grade school level). I was at first hesitant to order this book, as little information was provided by Amazon. After reading it cover to cover more than once, I'm happy to recommend CLIMATE RESPONSIVE DESIGN as one of my two best books for hot humid building design.

(The other favorite is COURTYARDS: Aesthetic, Social & Thermal Delight. Not just a "pretty picture book," Courtyards contains lots of highly useful information (charts, graphs, formulas) as well as wonderful color & B&W photos, plus line drawings.)

Climate Responsive Design has provided a wealth of solid, useful, pertinent information while working on projects for the Yucatan, where the climate ranges from hot humid in the summer/rainy months, to warm humid in winter/'dry' months, to WHEW in April & May (hot hot hot & maybe humid or not).

The Complete Book of Fruit Growing in Australia
Published in Paperback by Lothian Pub Co (April, 1998)
Author: Louis Glowinski

My bible
This book deals with growing the fruits we all know as well many I'd never heard of, the likes of Jaboticaba,Babaco,Cheimoya,Grumichama etc. which I now own and am eagerly awaiting them fruiting. I found the book extremely informative on all aspects of growing fruit, Especially on growing sub-tropical trees in temperate climates. The book has inspired me to turn my 1360 square metre residential block into an orchard with 45 fruit trees, shrubs and plants. Many of the 200 different trees and plants in the book are very ornamental, and as the author says you can have an ornamental edible garden.

A Continent Transformed: Human Impact on the Natural Vegetation of Australia (Meridian-Australian Geographical Perspectives)
Published in Paperback by Oxford Univ Pr (October, 1996)
Author: J. B. Kirkpatrick
Average review score:

Compact and a Must-Have!
I was lucky enough to travel from my home in Southern California to Tasmania to study abroad through my school, UCLA. At the University of Tasmania I had Professor Kirkpatrick for my Vegetation Management class, for which we bought this book. I assumed it would be dry, too large, too detailed, and boring, but it ended up proving to be inspiring, well-written, informative, and to the point. I recommend this book for anyone who is interested in a) environmental issues, b) the management of plants (especially Australian plants, although the knowledge is useful for any bioregion), or c) some general philosophies, arguments, and reasonings for conservation of nature and the effect of humans on the environment. I am a Geography major and risked overpacking my bags for the flight back to Cali in order to bring this book back; despite my broke status at the end of my study abroad semester, I refused to sell this book back.

Cop Out (Detective Inspector Carol Ashton Mystery, No 4)
Published in Paperback by Naiad Pr (April, 1991)
Author: Claire McNab
Average review score:

Steady entertainment
If you've read any of the Carol Ashton series, you know the formula for the books. There is always a mystery, with some twists and turns, and Ashton is trying to figure out what kind of personal relationship she really wants, with Sybil or anyone else. Each successive book reveals more of her personality. The issue of whether or not to come out of the closet is becoming an important one by this point. If you miss one or read the books out of order, you might get lost in the relationships. This is a good serviceable addition to the series.

Così

Art and its power to transform
Louis Nowra's "Cosi" is a beautiful example of how art can transform the lives and souls of human beings. Set in a mental institution, Melbourne, 1971, the play is about a young university drop out, Lewis, who is hired to put on a play at a mental institution. But when one of the patients convinces him to put on, instead, Mozart's opera "Cosi Fan Tutte", their wild journey begins.

Nowra makes the patients' mental disorders big enough to make it suitable for the stage and to reveal a great charge of humanity, honesty, passion that result in a hilarious well structured comedy, with characters and situations that are hard to forget.

Nowra also uses a burnt theatre as a metaphor for the Vietnam War and this is also a major issue that is dealt with in the play.

"Cosi" is a very interesting piece of theatre, that left me very satisfied.

Crossfire: An Australian Reconnaissance Unit in Vietnam
Published in Paperback by New Holland/Struik (September, 2001)
Authors: Peter Haran and Robert Kearney

Crossfire: An Australian Reconnaissance Unit In Vietnam
Highly recommended, there is an excellent chance that this book is the one for which you have been searching. Written by two Australian veterans of the war in Vietnam and standing as a tribute to all who served in that conflict, Crossfire is a unique look at the way in which a specialized Australian infantry platoon operated as a reconnaissance unit in the field. While the style of writing is at once both raw and gritty, it is nonetheless a book with a great deal of soul. It tells the story of how a bunch of blokes at the sharp end, fought (and in some cases, died) in what became Australia's longest and most divisive war. Like so many "Diggers" who went before them, they did their duty and more. They laughed together, felt pain and sometimes cried together, but throughout, maintained that very Australian characteristic in the face of adversity: a stoic determination to see the job done, no matter what.

Crossfire is much more than just another war story, however. It goes beyond the jungle-bashing and the contacts and the firefights; beyond the heat and the sweat and the sometimes gut-wrenching fear that were the essence of the grunt's war in Vietnam. The authors have adopted a mode of presentation that works extremely well and complements the theme of the main narrative. Interwoven with the exploits of the Reconnaissance Platoon as it sought to come to grips with its task in the jungles and rice paddies of Vietnam, is a separate but complementary story focused on the present. It looks briefly at a small group of veterans, some thirty years after the event, as they seek a kind of cathartic release while camping and hiking in the Flinders Ranges, that area of rugged but serene, natural beauty in "outback" South Australia.

Based on incidents and events that actually occurred, Crossfire not only holds the interest all the way, but in many places reads like a best-selling novel. Indeed, it is one of those rare books, which once started, is entirely difficult to put down. This is a very worthy addition to the genre, and it is a credit to Peter Haran and Robert Kearney that they have captured so faithfully what it was to be in action on the ground in Vietnam. If you are a veteran of the Vietnam War, then in a very real sense the incidents and events portrayed in the book will have an uncanny knack of taking you back there. It will take you back to another time and another place - to a conflict and an era that you have known intimately, and which will forever feature in the history of the Australian soldier at war. If you are not a veteran and you read no other book on the subject, you must read this one. As Lieutenant General Peter Cosgrove, Chief of the Australian Army, says in the foreword to Crossfire: "Read this story. Read about these Australians. They are so ordinary but so extraordinary - they are heroes."

Crossing Midfield Review
I thought the book Crossing midfield by Donaldson + Warn Architects is an original book based on various Architectural Designs by these Perth based architects. There are a variety of different projects in the book which I found very interesting especially as i live in Perth myself. I found the books content to be very thorough and well thought through. The pictures of these projects were excellent and you could really see how talented these architects really are.
