Global Restructuring: The Australian Experience (Meridian-Australian Geographical Perspectives)
Published in Paperback by Oxford Univ Pr (October, 1996)
Authors: Robert H. Fagan and Michael Webber
Average review score:

Global shift concisely explained
While there is a burgeoning and multidisciplinary literature on various dimensions of globalisation and global restructuring and while the term is certainly elastic and contested, this book is well written and ideal as a shorter introduction. It manages to be concise and comprehensive in its treatment of the major material processes and actors involved in economic transformation. It is useful for economic geographers and political economists as well as a general readership. Its empirical focus is Australian industry which can be useful if you're looking to do a comparative/ antipodean study or review.

Goodbye Dear Old Homeland
Published in Paperback by Creative Consortium Books (01 May, 2001)
Author: Yasna Sikic Hood
Average review score:

A Gem
In this country of immigrants, how many of us know the story of our own family's arrival here? What forces drove them? What risks did they take and what hardships did they endure? We may never know the answers to those questions. However, reading the story of Ante and Fedora Sikic's journey brought me a little closer to understanding and appreciating the universal refugee experience. Yasna Sikic Hood, in photos and in her translations of Ante's diary and family letters, has brought her parents' story alive. I highly recommend "Goodbye Dear Old Homeland".

Startlingly
I loved this book. At times it was very funny; at times very sad. Ellis has written a briilant mixe of autobiogrphy, and political analysis. I sat reading the book, and I could distinctly feel a wam glow around me. Thanks Bob.

Great Expectations: Microeconomic Reform and Australia
Published in Paperback by Allen & Unwin (March, 1997)
Author: John Quiggin
Average review score:

John Quiggin's appraisal of reform is unsurpassed
Microeconomic Reform in Australia, as in most Western economies, has now been more often than not the main focus in the policy agenda of governments. In Australia, the process of microeconomic reform has progressed substantially since the 25 percent across-the-board reduction in tariffs by the Whitlam government in 1973. This process has intensified further in recent years since the adoption by governments of both political persuasions of the Hilmer Report into Competition Policy in 1992. Quiggin argues that there has been in Australia a distortion of economic priorities due to the overstated claims about the benefits of microeconomic reform. This, he argues, has encouraged an uncritical acceptance of "economically unsound policies proposed in the name of competition". Quiggin's analysis of microeconomic reform in Australia includes a much welcomed rigorous adoption of welfare economics principles as well as an indepth explanation of the public and private interest approaches to government policy. In particular, Quiggin critically analyses the deregulation of the financial sector, airlines and telecommunications, as well as tariff reform, privatisation and competitive tendering and contracting. John Quiggin's book is a timely reminder that policies aimed at improving economic efficiency and overall welfare must necessarily include an evaluation of economic fact rather than fiction. This book, while highly technical for undergraduates, is an essential read for all would-be economists or those with an interest in the economic debate in Australia. "Great Expecatations" cements John Quiggin's place as one of Australia's foremost economists. Simply put, this is a book of substance.

Greek Voices in Australia: A Tradition of Poetry, Prose and Drama
Published in Hardcover by Australian Natl Univ Pr (August, 1988)
Author: George Kanarakis
Average review score:

The authoritative collection of Greek-Australian writing.
From the first Greek migrants to the most recent, and including the children of these migrants, retracing their roots, George Kanarakis has painstakingly put together a collection of some of the finest prose, poetry and drama written by Greeks in Australia up to 1988. The volume was over ten years in the making, and has received several awards since publication (in both its Greek and English versions). It was an official Bicentennial Project in Australia during the 1988 celebrations. A truly fine book which captures the complex elements of the emotions and incredible spirit inherent to the Greek migrant experience in Australia.

What an exotic paradise!
I'm recently out of college and have had the desire to go to a beautiful region with history, nice beaches, and warm weather for a vacation. Someone told me I should check into Guam so I got this book and was amazed at the detail put into it! It lists different historic sites, parks, beaches, and other great places to visit and everything each one has to offer along with the story behind it. It even summarized a list of twelve essential things to do when you visit Guam which is helpful for an indecisive person like me who would want to do it all!!! :) The clincher that made me sure I want to go there on vacation? The clear and colorful pictures throughout the book that show how incredible and breathtaking each part of the island is! I can't wait to take a hike on Guam to one of their many majestic waterfalls!

Guide Dogs: From Puppies to Partners
Published in Hardcover by Allen & Unwin (Australia) Pty Ltd (January, 2002)
Author: Diana Lawrenson
Average review score:

Excellent Choice!
The making of guide dogs in Australia, from the breeding of puppies, through puppy raising, harness training, matching with a blind partner, and their eventual careers. It's unusual to find such a complete overview of the life of a guide dog! The information about breeding stock, and harness training is especially hard to find in other sources. The book also describes several successful guide dog teams. Beautiful photos do a great job of showing concepts discussed in the text. Although some training terms and tiny details differ, this information transfers well to guide dog programs in the U.S. The book is aimed at students, but would also make a quick and thurough primer for adults. Deserves a place in any library with a section about assistance dogs.

Guide to Australian battlefields of the Western Front, 1916-1918
Published in Unknown Binding by Kangaroo Press : Australian War Memorial ()
Author: John Laffin
Average review score:

The ultimate guide for Aussie WWI enthusiasts
This is one of those books that 99% of people will find an interesting read, and the other 1% will be overjoyed that it was published. I fall into the latter category. Being an avid follower of the Australian forces in France during WWI, I am always on the lookout for books on the subject. This is one of the few books I've read that takes the historic facts of the war, and incorporates them into a practical tour of the battlefields. The tales of war are extremely well researched and presented, maps and photos add much to the text, and nice touches such as a chapter describing the inscriptions on Australian war graves are very moving. Even if you are not specifically interested in Australian movements during the war, this book has alot of interesting information. If you are planning to visit the battlefields of France, DO NOT LEAVE HOME WITHOUT THIS BOOK!

Guide to Madagascar, 5th Edition
Published in Paperback by Bradt Travel Guides (August, 1997)
Author: Hilary Bradt
Average review score:

This has to be the definitive book about Madagascar, its people and wildlife
Excellent - one of those guides that make you feel you've already been there. Given the size of Madagascar and the difficulty of its internal communications, the update is as good as one could reasonably demand. Ms Bradt knows her subject, from terrain to people to unique wildlife. No visitor should be without this invaluable publication
