iJET Weekly Travel Intelligence Report - Fiji
Published in Digital by iJET Travel Intelligence (28 July, 2003)
Author: iJET Travel Intelligence
Average review score:

Must Read for all travelers
The Intelligence reports are really great content. Timely, packed with info, and affordable. I'll be spending my honeymoon on Fiji this year, and can do so with peace of mind after reading the report. This will tell you politcal climate, crime rates, etc. in much more detail than a traditional travel book would. I'll still buy the travel books, but this makes a great companion piece. Where ever you are going, pick one of these up... (and no shipping since it is Digital)

Illusions of power : the fate of a reform government

Illusions of Power: The Fate of a Reform Government
This is an excellent and first hand account of the misfortune, scandal and calamity that befel the Whitlam Government in Australia from 1972-1975. As the first Labor government in 29 years, the members of the new regime were presented with an opportunity for reform unequaled in Australian history. However, as the book details, the dream sooned turned to nightmare, as the party was rocked by scandal in the form of the loans affair and many other misfortunes. Finally, with the Senate blocking the flow of money needed to run the country, the Government was dismissed by the Govoner General John Kerr. So was the fate of a reform government.

This is a lively and well written account of the events seen at first hand by Michael Sexton, who was personally involved in all the events and knew everyone involved.

Bring it with you!
This is a really great book. I got it on our australian natural history trip and it has in it birds, fish, inverts and mammals: big pictures and lots of informative small text. The format is similar to the Facts on File series. We took tons of notes in our copy. I hope I can find this book available somewhere - I want to give it as a gift.

Imperial Benevolence: Making British Authority in the Pacific Islands
Published in Hardcover by University of Hawaii Press (June, 1998)
Author: Jane Samson

The myth of 'British Gunboat Diplomacy'
I found this book eminently readable. It shows that the author has a good grasp of the subject which she has analysed in an inteligent manner. Unlike the majority of books that try to put across a view that contradicts the prevelent thinking of the day, this book has convinced me to change many of my beliefs concerning the area of history covered.I would love to have the oppertunity to discuss the book further with the author.

In from the Cold: National Security and Parliamentary Democracy
Published in Hardcover by Clarendon Pr (June, 1994)
Authors: Laurence Lustgarten and Ian Leigh
Average review score:

What in Rose....
Lustgarten and Leigh have produced a definitive text on the issues that surround National Security issues for a Parliamentary Democracy. Published in 1994 this should be considered one of the primary texts on internal security issues in relation to Parliamentary Democracy and Civil and Societal Liberties.

I highly recommend it to both graduate and undergraduate students in the field. But if might have the temerity to suggest it. Giving the shifting paradigms of Security issues Lustgarten & Leigh deserve to give us a newly revised edition at their earliest convenience. Having said that, read this book and if they revise it read that one too!

In search of Ned : a travelogue of Kelly country

Author: Kevin J. Passey
Average review score:

In Serach of Ned-A travelogue of Kelly Country.
Of the many books on Ned Kelly available, this one has to be one of the best.Although it was published in 1988,most of the directions given to historical sites are still relevant.Photographs are of average quality but info.provided is invaluable to a Kelly enthusiast. The writing is clear and concise and obviously geared toward people already familiar to the story.Passey covers all regions of "Kelly Country"well and the chapter on pubs is a nice interlude. As this book was a small edition size of 1000,copies are scarce.Grab it if you can!

The Incomplete Book of Australian Mammals
Published in Hardcover by Kangaroo Press (March, 1998)
Authors: Ronald Strahan and Pamela Conder
Average review score:

A beautifully illustrated book of verse.
This is a wonderfully whimsical book of verse about Australian mammals. The verse ranges from humour to serious conservation messages. The book is magnificently illustrated throughout with Pamela Conder's paintings and line drawings.

Pamela Conder is reknowned as a painter of animals, with a unique style that captures the essence of the animal. Her line drawings are precise, while her paintings are full of life.

As well as verse about Australia's more well-known animals, such as the koala and kangaroo, the book also features many lesser known species such as the planigale and antichinus. A final indication of the humour within this book is the title itself, which is a play on the title of Ronald Strahan's more well known book "The Complete Book Of Australian Mammals".

While this book is listed as having being written for children, it is highly recommanded for all ages.

Indigenous People's Rights in Australia, Canada & New Zealand
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (March, 2001)
Author: Paul Havemann
Average review score:

Indigenous Peoples' Rights
If you are concerned to understand Indigenous Peoples' Rights from a perpsective that distinguishes an historical, cultural and legal issues and developments, buy this book. It is a carefully edited and well organised collection in which the 20 contributors explore commonalities of experiences under colonialism and social and legal moves towards self-determination in countries with a similar legal and constitutional history. However the collection does not gloss over differences in indenous peoples' experiences within these jurisdictions, and this aspect not only provides stark and thoughtful contrasts, it exposes ongoing problems for governance and social relations.

Paul Havemann provides several chapters that comprise an historical and thematic framework for the close analysis in the six sections that cover: Public International Law; Sovereignty, Self-Determination, and Coexistence; the impact of colonial settlement in the Anglo-Commonwealth; Indigenous Peoples' Rights Claims; the relationships between criminalisation of indigenous peoplss and colonisation; administering citizenship and self-determination and constitutional issues arising from indigenous rights claims. In each of these sections, well known writers including Ranginui Walker, Marcia Langton, Alan Ward and Paul Chartrand analyse the specificities of the experiences of indigenous peoples in their national contexts.

What is especially satisfying (and challenging) about this collection is its attention to detailed analysis, lack of generality and avoidance of stereotyping and puffery. Although there is not an exhaustive coverage of the heterogeneity of indigenous viewpoints, the collection avoids caricature of key differences and demands the reader pay attention to historical complexity in both indigenous narratives as well as the contested nature of law as it's developed in each context. The collection requires time and thought to fully digest, since its multi-dimensional methodology has the reader aware throughout of many further research possibilities opened up by the questions raised. It is an exciting and intelligent contribution to debates about 'rights', 'indigeniety', 'self-determination' and international law.
