Islands of Samoa: Reference Map of Tutuila, Manu'A, 'Upolu, and Savai'I

Author: James A. Bier

an outstanding map of the Samoas
As the author of Tonga-Samoa Handbook, I've used James A. Bier's map of the Samoas many times to check dubious place name spellings or to verify geographical information. The detailed index makes finding places a breeze and the drawing is amazingly clear. I recommend this map highly.

Jean Lee : the last woman hanged in Australia

Author: Paul R. Wilson
Average review score:

Gruesome and Great
I came across this book in the crime section of my library and, havingnever heard of the case before - since the events occured long beforemy birth- I was soon captivated. What attracted me to the book was that it was not written as a dry historical piece. Rather what makes it fascinating is how the writers (Paul Wilson co-wrote with Don Treble and Robyn Lincoln) include imagined conversations, to try to fill in the dots, where only the criminals themselves would have known the truth. These conversations appealed to the playwright in me. Jean Lee was the last woman hanged in my country, but not the last person, since at least one other man has been hanged, to my knowledge since. Jean's accomplices' Robert Clayton and Norman Andrews were also hanged at the same time Jean was. The writers make the claim that the hangings occured out of expedience for the resident state government, when doubts still remained concerning the case. It was never clear what part Jean Lee played in the murder, and the police interrogation procedures of the accused three was later found to be highly questionable. The writers also believe that an example was made of Jean, because of her sex and working-class origins, as a warning to other women of conservative post-war Melbourne of the consequences of deviating from the socially approved path of feminity. This latter claim is one I have a bit of trouble with, because to my mind, the writers have made it clear Jean intended to swindle Pop Kent, the murder victim. The fact the he was killed as a result of being robbed does not diminish her responsibilty for her actions. The book is meticulously researched, and includes photographs of all the people involved. I particularly liked seeing the gallows where the hangings took place and the "punishment" hood which features on the cover, creating a medieval and creepy image.

John Flynn of Flying doctors and Frontier Faith
An excellent true story of the visionary John Flynn, pioneer of the Flying Doctors of the Australia Outback. A man who had ideas far ahead of his time he would not give up and had a faith that served him well. John Flynn made many friends while he convinced them to volunteer to help him achieve his goal of serving the entire outback. His vision was to somehow connect everyone to each other and to serve them with medical help closer than 10 days or more travel. How he achieved this seemingly impossible task makes a fascinating story.

Joseph Foveaux: Power and Patronage in Colonial New South Wales
Published in Paperback by New South Wales Univ Pr Ltd (May, 2000)
Author: Anne-Maree Whitaker
Average review score:

Sydney Essential
If you saw any of the Sydney during the Olympics, you are sure to find this account of its early years a fascinating revelation. Based on the life of Lieutenant Governor Joseph Foveaux, demonised in Robert Hughes' The Fatal Shore, this book reveals the links and patronage networks which held the British empire together. I liked the way the author in each chapter flung the reader into a physical description of the place where the action happens. And I even found myself caring about Foveaux's successes and setbacks. This is a warm, elegantly written and compelling new departure in Australian historical writing.

Bagheera and Nimbus reunite via "Just Cruising"
During our 1987 voyage to the South Pacific aboard SV Nimbus, our family had the pleasure of joining up with the Copeland family and Bagheera. Our wonderful family times together are brought back to life through the pages of "Just Cruising".

Liza's work is an inspiration to all and accurately portrays the cruising life. The book is an informative guide for couples and families. "Just Cruising" shows how you can harness the wind and, with planning and caution, can safely cruise to remote and exotic lands. It includes wonderful descriptions of destinations, sights and cultures. Two informative 'how-to' sections complete the book.

During our return voyage to the South Pacific in 1999, we were shocked when we were asked "Are you the Nimbus family as shown in the book "Just Cruising"? From French Polynesnia throughout our voyage to New Zealand, we were routinely approached by young and old, eager to discuss the joy of "Just Cruising"! The book is still in date and used by many as a useful overview to read before making landfall. In conclusion, "Just Cruising" is a must read whether cruising the Med, Caribbean or South Pacific!

Good work Liza!

A must read book!
This novel tells the untold story of the Australian aborigines. Who are the people who lived in Australia before the British came?
