Madagascar Wildlife
Published in Paperback by Bradt Travel Guides (June, 1996)
Authors: Hilary Bradt, Derek Schuurman, and Nick Garbutt
Average review score:

I'm sorry to see this book is out of print!
I have had this book for about 4 years now, and I can't believe it's out of print! I have a deep interest and love for the wildlife of Madagascar, and have not been able to find many books that show the diverse life of this endangered island. To no longer have this book is a shame - if you are looking for a beautifully photographed book that chronicles Madagascars wildlife, don't give up on trying to find this book - it's a true gem.

Making Peoples: A History of the New Zealanders, from Polynesian Settlement to the End of the Nineteenth Century
Published in Paperback by University of Hawaii Press (February, 2002)
Author: James Belich
Average review score:

The best introduction to early NZ history
James Belich is probably now the definitive New Zealand historian, with a strong grasp of both Mäori and pakeha (New Zealand decendants of Europeans) perspectives. This account of New Zealand's history up to the mid-to late 19th century is both informative and interesting.

Not everyone will agree with all of his interpretations, but they are always challenging and well argued as well as being a genuinely good read.

Male Homosexual Behavior and the Effects of AIDS Education: A Study of Behavior and Safer Sex in New Zealand and South Australia

Author: B. R. Simon Rosser
Average review score:

Good analysis of the issues
Rosser does a good job presenting the results of a series of related studies and discussing the implications of their findings, especially in their broader context.

Maps Are Territories: Science Is an Atlas: A Portfolio of Exhibits
Published in Paperback by University of Chicago Press (January, 1994)
Author: David Turnbull
Average review score:

all over the map
This book is all over the map, but what exactly does that mean?

Turnbull begins with a quote, "...all theory may be regarded as a kind of map extended over space and time." (Michael Polanyi) How tempting to describe difficult concepts as "like a map." By page two we're dealing with Borges, and a page later Lewis Carroll. Maps are more complex than we ever imagined.

The discussion of Aboriginal-Australian Maps (Exhibit 5) takes us deeper still, as we learn that their dream time and painting contain elements of geographical knowledge which these people equate with magic.

Originally published in 1989, it remains way ahead of its time. Multicultural, lacking any cant, beautifully illustrated, intellectually exciting

The Maverick Guide to New Zealand
Published in Paperback by Pelican Publishing Company (January, 1982)
Author: Robert W. Bone
Average review score:

A Truly Refreshing Guide!
I have travelled before using the "old standards" (Lonely Planet, Let's Go, etc), but I have never been fully statisfied by them. When I stumbled upon this series, I was amazed. They include so much information, it is like a god-send! It was a history lesson, language tutor, and travel guide all in one! Over half of the book was comprised of the history of the island, local slang, and the culture of the Kiwis. The travel section was not lacking by any means. It mentioned places other books did not, and give a through description of the listings, along with local signifigance. It had everything I'd ever dreamed a travel book would have. I'd recommend all the books in this series and I plan to use them exclusively for all my further travels.

Melanie and the night animal
Published in Unknown Binding by Published by Penguin Books Australia in association with Omnibus Books ()
Author: Gillian Rubinstein
Average review score:

Melanie and the Night Animal - a narrative of excellence
By the end of the first chapter you nknow that Melanie and the Night Animal is a narrative of literary excellence. Ms Rubinstein has managed to descibe a little girl who has wishes and fears that will be easily identifiable to readers of 8 years and over. The main characters are thoughtfully developed throughout and the emergence of the night animal not only promotes mystery and adventure but a genuine and positive change in the main protagonists, Melanie and Jasmine.

This book may not have the intricate plot of Ms Rubinstein's other novels, Space Demons, Skymaze, Foxspell, et al, but it certainly has a style which introduces the younger reader to a novella of depth. The story is set in Sth Australia, but what does that matter? The thoughts and feelings of the characters are universal.

This is an excellent book for literature studies in the classroom as it contains elements of fine narrative writing - highly valued in Australian, New Zealand and English classrooms.

Mike
Published in Unknown Binding by University of Queensland Press ; Distributed in the USA and Canada by International Specialized Book Services ()
Author: Brian Caswell
Average review score:

A well written book about the problems of young kids today.
Mike had just moved to a new house in Sydney from Melbourne. He was very stressed about moving and had trouble settling down in his new home. At his new school he had many problems with bullies who bashed him up and ate his lunch. Read about how Mike adapts to the changes in his life, overcomes the bullies and makes new friends. I thought this was an excellent novel because it was well written and realistic. The author also had a sense of humour. I recommend this book to readers aged 11 plus.
