Secret Sydney
Published in Paperback by New Holland/Struik (April, 2001)
Author: James Cockington
Average review score:

A great reference for offbeat finds in Sydney
In my first visit to Sydney I covered more ground and learned more about the city than my Sydney-veteran companion had seen in numerous trips. The maps and directions were accurate, and the tidbits were a great combination of history and quirky facts and folklore.

Sydney is a beautiful city and this books gets visitors out of the usual tourist spots. Many of these sites truly are hidden...I found myself searching a graveyard for a unique tomb, walking down a lizard-populated path of rainforest reserve hidden in the middle of a residential area, investigating the mystery of a missing heiress, and scheduling a shiatsu massage (the author was right...getting scrubbed, stepped on, and kneaded was an ideal finale to a day of touring).

Secret Sydney
For all those who think they know Sydney- be prepared to be amazed!! Interesting facts and local tales enable the reader to rediscover popular tourist areas such as Bondi and Kings Cross. Detailed maps and directions will see you discovering new and beautiful areas known only to locals. For those who love Sydney and those wishing to discover it, this book has something for everyone. Extremely easy to read and immensely enjoyable, see your city with new eyes!!

Seeking the Centre : The Australian Desert in Literature, Art and Film
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (February, 1999)
Author: Roslynn D. Haynes
Average review score:

Fascinating Insight into the Red Center
Haynes has put a great deal of effort, energy, and insight into an incredible exhaustive exploration of what the Australian Desert means to Australians and how it came about . Especially interesting to me are the sections on Australian Explorers and how their hardships, especially failures have been transformed into myths. As American who spent a semester in Australia, taking an Australian Studies course, I found this book supported what I had learned, while futhering my interests. Haynes provides numourous books, films, poems, works of art in detail discussion about many big name Australian creatives such as Nolan and White. I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to know more about Australian Culture.

Sex Work and Sex Workers in Australia
Published in Paperback by New South Wales Univ Pr Ltd (February, 1995)
Authors: Roberta Perkins and Garrett Prestage
Average review score:

The quintessential book on the sex industry in austrailia
Sex Work and Sex Workers in Austrailia is one of the most comprehensive books on the sex industry that I have ever read. This book's main focus is on prostitution and it is broken down on many levels:female, male, transsexual, health care, oral histories, and foreign workers(eg. Thai). It is very easy to read and one leaves this book with an excellent history lesson as well as viewpoints from both men and women which balances this book. Highest Recommendation!

Shadow Shark
Joe is twelve years old and is moving to Cockle Bay to live with his cousin Meg and her family. He has never heard of Scarface, the leggend shark before he got there. He was swimming with his cousins when suddenly he was being chased by a huge shark. It was scarface. He just barely got away from him, and then his adventure started. Once the town knew that Scarface was back they had to catch the giant shark. They went to see if they could.
While they were on their hunt for Scarface they ran into a few problems. They couldn't catch him. They had Scarface on the line a lot, but they couldn't get him into the boat. When they got a few days in their boat had a problem, and blew up from a gas leak. That sent the kids, Meg and Joe, and Meg's dad on to Wayward Island.
It is an Island where Joe's Uncle pastures sheep. The family is stuck on the island and they have no food, and are stranded. Their boat was sunk, and they were burned from the explosion. Meg's dad was burnt the worst. So the rest of the book is a fight to get off the island and save the dad. Shadow Shark is a great mystery at the end. I recommend reading this book if you like good adventure books.

The Shape of Three.
Published in School & Library Binding by Hill & Wang Pub (September, 1972)
Author: Lilith. Norman
Average review score:

Brilliant writing. I've never forgotten it.
Wonderful story of separated twins raised in different class environments in Australia, and what happens to the respective families when they try to "switch back". I read this for the first time when I was 8, and for the next few years, checked it out of the library as often as possible. Great characters, families. Good teen book.

Shelf Life : Supermarkets and the Changing Cultures of Consumption
Published in Paperback by Cambridge University Press (October, 1998)
Author: Kim Humphery
Average review score:

ACCURATE & RELEVANT - RESEARCH BASED
This is an extremely valuable book for anyone researching or studying the Australian FMCG / grocery business.

It is very accurate and not at all self serving to the industry who are followers not leaders.

It contains a wealth of quantitative information in a structured fashion, while remaining easy to read.

It is worth buying for anyone who has anything from an assignment to a PhD to do on the topic.
