St Helena - Ascension - Tristan da Cunha: The Bradt Travel Guide
Published in Paperback by Bradt Travel Guides (May, 2002)
Author: Sue Steiner
Average review score:

Fun to read... but how do we get there?
Hats off to Bradt for producing this guide in the first place. The three destinations covered in the book are about as "off the beaten track" as it's possible to get without falling off the edge of the Earth. They are 3 tiny islands floating in the middle of the South Atlantic. None can be reached by commercial air service. St. Helena is accessible by a regular, but quite infrequent passenger ship traveling between England and Cape Town. (The schedule of which requires visitors to spend either only a couple of hours/days on the island, or several weeks.)
Ascension is a stop on a few of the St. Helena runs. Tristan, the most remote of all, is served only by the occassional freighter or private vessel.
Not surprisingly, none of the destinations is exactly overflowing with tourist attractions [though St. Helena, of course, has some Napoleon sites], but this (along with their inaccessibility) means that they aren't exactly overflowing with tourists either. Which, for some people, is what gives them their appeal.

No, I won't be visiting these destinations any time soon. But the guidebook was a lot of fun to read, providing plenty of fodder for travel-dreams.

Still Waters

Author: Judith Saxton
Average review score:

One of the books that I read in a long while!
I came across the Judith Saxton works earlier this year, I can say that I never been disapointed with any of her book. Still Waters tells the story of Tess and Mal two people who different ends of the earth, but with the coming Second World War they finally meet and hope to discover truth behind a secret that has haunted Tess most of her life. Ms. Saxton is able to make the reader a sense on how life is wartime Britian. A really great book!

Streetwise Sydney
Published in Map by Streetwise Maps (01 September, 2000)
Author: Streetwise Maps
Average review score:

It's not a map, it;s a travel agent
Streetwise Sydney is essential to experiencing a city rich in history. It is laminated, so it's easy to fold, and it fits almost anywhere - a breast pocket perhaps. The map color codes different points of interest and of necessity- i.e. the Royal Botanic Gardens, Restaurants and Hotels. This map made a trip to a foreign city not so intimidating, and I wouldn't want to use any other kind when I plan my next adventure.

A Modern Day "We of the Never Never"!
I was lent a copy of this sequel to "From Strength to Strength" I couldn't put it down and now am struggling to get copies of it and the first book. Even jumping into the sequel without the introductory book, Sara's tales are mesmerizing, adventurous and well written!

Strict rules

Author: Andrew McMillan
Average review score:

A must read!
Strict Rules takes us back to 1986 and on tour with Midnight Oil and the Warumpi Band as they bring their distinctive styles of rock through the Aboriginal settlements of the outback. But this is more than a rock'n'roll road trip, it's a sensitive insight into the tragic history and ongoing struggle of Australia's original inhabitants. Intensely interesting. A must read not only for Midnight Oil fans, but for anyone with an interest in indigenous culture.

Subhuman Redneck Poems
Published in Hardcover by Farrar Straus & Giroux (July, 1997)
Author: Les A. Murray
Average review score:

A must-have for anyone interested in modern poetry.
Les Murray is quite simply one of the finest poets of his generation. He combines the earthiness of a Seamus Heaney with the passion of a Dylan Thomas. Add a healthy dose of humour and a deep and compassionate understanding of the falibility of humankind and you're getting closer.

"Subhuman Redneck Poems" is a book full of gems - I challenge anyone to read "Burning Want" or "The Last Hellos" and remain unmoved. Les Murray has the gift of being able to quickly and clearly convey a person, a setting, or a situation. The poems are very accessible, which must surely be a rarity given the prevalence of Post-Modernist babble.

He is a poet of, and for Australia, but his appeal is not limited to Antipodeans. From a discussion of cultural cringe ("A Brief History") to a heartbreaking look at the life of his autistic son ("It Allows a Portrait in Line-Scan at Fifteen"), he carries his audience effortlessly.

This is a superb book of poetry. But don't take my word for it - see for yourself why it won the 1997 TS Eliot Prize.
